Sam Gray’s talents as an accomplished artist have spanned five decades. He began his training in the late 60’s as a portrait photographer. He has received over six hundred awards, both nationally and internationally, for his ability to “see light”. Having an insatiable appetite for learning various artistic techniques has kept him actively growing in this area. However, he enjoys working with mixed media best.
He has been sought out by clients from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Sam’s excellent communication skills allow him to work well with clients of all ages and nationalities. He frequently is commissioned to create portraits for both private and public collections.
Much of his artistic training has been done on various locations in the States as well as Europe. While traveling he has managed to collect literally thousands of scenic landscapes. Many of his favorites have already been painted and are available for purchase. Customized art pieces can also be commissioned from his immense art collection as well.

Sam Gray’s innovative photography, his unique sense of his subject and his mastery of skill have established him as a internationally recognized Master Portrait Photographer. Often reflective, his portraits have a quiet grace which has become the hallmark of his style. His portraits range in subject from the accomplished executive to the newborn child, and in spirit from light-hearted and colorful to somber and still. With great care and sensitivity, he draws the person within onto film, patiently looking for the right elements. Sam Gray’s mastery of technique and skill in photography have earned him the Master Artist, Master of Photography and the Photographic Craftsman degrees. In 1989 he was inducted into the International Photographers’ Hall of Fame. His portraiture has been displayed throughout the United States, including a special exhibition at the grand opening of the Walt Disney World’s EPCOT Center. He is the recipient of over 600 state and national awards and honors. Sam Gray has been featured by Kodak on three separate occasions in their Portrait and Business techniques programs that are shown around the country to professional photographers. His awards include the Master Portrait Photographer of the Year by the Professional Photographers of North Carolina and Best of Show portrait in Southeast Regional competition held in Atlanta,Ga.. His work has also appeared in numerous publications, including magazines and record album covers. He has been listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in the South and West, Personalities of the South, and International Biographies of the World published in Cambridge, England. A popular speaker, he has lectured in more than 25 states and at the United States and Canadian National Professional Photographers’ Conventions. Twice he has taught “Advanced Portraiture” at the Winona School for professional photographers in Mt. Prospect, Illinois. He is involved in numerous professional organizations and has held offices on a state and local level. He is a former president of the Professional Photographers of North Carolina and the Photographic Society of the Triangle.
